Summary

This grant is available within a specific county in California, intended to bring arts education more deeply into public K–12 school classrooms. It is structured around funding artist residencies, workshops, and live performances delivered during the school year. The aim is to enrich core curriculum, expose students to professional arts, and foster hands-on creative experiences.

Eligible applicants are typically professional artists or arts educators who live in the target county. They must have experience working in classrooms or school settings and be willing to partner with teachers. Schools (or after-school arts programs) served by the county education office may also play a role—project proposals usually require a teacher’s request or commitment as part of the application. Private schools are generally excluded under this program.

The grant supports a variety of disciplines: performing arts (dance, music, theater), visual arts, media arts, literary arts, interdisciplinary arts, and indigenous or culturally rooted arts practices. Projects might take the form of a one-time performance, several classroom sessions, or a multi-session residency (over days or weeks) engaging students in artmaking.

Award amounts are moderate and intended to support meaningful but manageable arts projects. The total pool of funding is limited (for example, a recent cycle allocated about $18,000 across all participating artists). Because funding is finite, not all proposals will be funded.

Application deadlines are set each year (e.g., mid-November in one recent cycle), and award notification occurs shortly thereafter (by early December). The program is annual, aligned with the school year. Projects must be executed during that academic year and conform to timelines.

In evaluating proposals, reviewers look for clear alignment with curriculum goals, student engagement, feasibility, evidence of prior arts experience, and how the project will meaningfully impact students. It’s a great opportunity for local artists to partner with schools and bring creative energy directly to students in their community.
